I just wrote two perfectly average essays in my final English exam which serves as the last ever assessment of both my university career and my entire formal education. I got an essay returned which I was convinced I’d fucked up but actually ended up with a First and my friend blagged us a bottle of sparking perry for free. All in all a bloody good end to university.

Now to spend the rest of my life on Netflix…

Scooch played at my primary school back when they were trying for a legitimate pop career in the late 90s/early 2000s. They were just as terrible, even when I was about 7 years old.

Just made the journey into town to buy Fringe Season 5. HMV sold me a copy with the red security lock still intact, underneath the cellophane. I had assumed it to be part of the packaging. It’s impossible to open without industrial strength magnets. I own Fringe S5 and am unable to watch it. It’s unbearably frustrating. How is this a mistake that people make? Not only did someone forget to take the lock off the case, someone else didn’t check before they cling wrapped it and then the guy at HMV didn’t check before he sold it to me. Is the world entirely populated with numskulls?

I just finished United States of Tara. I thought the ending cut the story a bit short but I assume...

I just finished United States of Tara. I thought the ending cut the story a bit short but I assume this was due to the show getting cancelled. Overall though it’s a damn good show. I love everything Diablo Cody makes anyway - I even loved Jennifer’s Body - but this show is seriously brilliant. Toni Collette is amazingly talented and insanely underrated. Also Rosemarie DeWitt, Brie Larson and Patton Oswalt. Oh and Eddie Izzard in season three. I’m planning on writing something a little more cohesive and insightful later on but right now I’m still processing.

Seriously though, watch this show. You’ll love it.

A Word on Community Season 4

With the finale of S4 of Community airing this week and news of whether it will be renewed imminent, I realised today that I haven’t watched Community in five weeks. This means I haven’t seen the last half of this season. Now before you get mad at me for not giving the show its ratings, let me just note that I live in the UK and so my viewing figures would not count anyway. I originally considered this lapse in my viewing has largely due to time constraints. I’ve recently finished my last year at university and have, for the last five weeks, been finishing my dissertation and my script project in time for my deadlines. So I’ve been busy and haven’t had time to watch, right? But actually that’s not it. See I made time to watch Parks and Rec and Bomb Girls, hell I even made time to hate watch Glee. I just didn’t make time for Community. And this week, having finished all my assignments, I’ve been taking a break from work before revising for my final exam. This break has involved much binge watching of TV online and on Netflix. I’ve watched almost three seasons of United States of Tara this week, yet I still haven’t watched those last five episodes of Community.

So this isn’t a time issue. This isn’t me being too busy. This is me not wanting to watch any more, and that hurts to say. This is a show I once loved and now I can’t bring myself to watch what could be its final hours. An allegory comes to mind (Buffy spoilers ahead):

You know in season five of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, when Joyce died and Dawn tried to bring her back? She was warned that sometimes people come back wrong. They may look like the person they were when they were alive, but they aren’t them, they’re different. Dawn went ahead and brought Joyce back anyway. But then, when she saw the shadow of her mother’s profile walking past the living room window, she changed her mind. She breaks the spell, leaving her mother dead and her fond memories of her intact.

This is how I feel about season four of Community. For me Community died when Dan Harmon was fired. And despite everyone’s warnings NBC brought it back from the dead. They stole the demon’s egg and cast the spell but unlike Dawn they opened the door and played house for thirteen episodes like nothing had changed. But something had changed. Community came back wrong. It looked the same sure, but it’s heart was gone. It was an imitation, a facsimile of what Community once was. Community was the epitome of postmodern so perhaps it makes sense for it to become an imitation of itself, for it to tip into hyperreality and leave its soul behind. But I don’t want a soulless Community. I don’t want to pretend like the zombie in the corner is Joyce alive and well again. I want to break the spell and leave the door closed. I want to remember the show I loved for what it was, not the simulacra it became in season four where the characters never felt like the ones I knew and the storylines stopped being intelligent and started being gimmicks. ”We’re doing a puppet episode!” they’d cry. And I’d sit thinking about how Dan Harmon would never reduce an episode of his show to its references. The new showrunners tried so hard to replicate what had once been, they ignored the depth of the characters, the subtlety of the homages and the basic fact that Community was not a show about pop culture references. It was a show about seven deeply flawed characters and the family they built. They seemed so intent on bringing the show back from the dead that they forgot the rule that every pop culture aficionado should know: you can never truly resurrect anyone without consequences. Even Buffy herself came back wrong for a while. Sometimes it’s best to leave things to rest in peace. And, with a heavy heart, I have to say that Community was better off dead.

So yeah, six seasons and a movie would have been nice, but not like this. I’d settle for three almost perfect seasons, a good ending and another example of a show screwed over by the networks - over a soulless reanimation of something I once loved and another season which would just make me sad about what we lost when Community came back wrong.
